X is gearing up to expand access to its Grok AI chatbot, with a "freemium" version currently in development for users who don't subscribe to X Premium. This expansion could give more of the platform's vast user base a taste of the AI tool, allowing a wider audience to explore what Grok brings to the table.
At present, Grok remains exclusive to X Premium subscribers, with roughly 1.3 million people, or 0.26% of X’s total user base, paying to access the app. This limited availability means that Grok hasn’t yet provided a significant volume of user insights, so questions about its value to the larger X ecosystem remain largely unanswered. A free, limited-access version would allow more users to test the waters, potentially boosting X Premium subscriptions if people find the AI assistant valuable.
“A free version, albeit with limited usage for non-paying users, would at least enable more people to try it out, and could lure more X Premium sign-ups. I mean, that also depends on how many people want to generate images to go with their posts, or indeed, generate their X replies entirely. But the only way to know if a lot of people will find value in it is to give them access, and then X can make a more accurate assessment of its potential in this respect,” the company explains.
A broader rollout could also serve X Corp, the parent of X, by attracting crucial investment into its xAI initiative. Grok’s larger audience could lend the tool the spotlight needed to show its potential—whether it’s a hit or just another addition to the growing AI lineup remains to be seen. But with the freemium approach, at least, more users will soon have a chance to weigh in.
